This cancer is so rare that doctors usually do not expect it. Chemotherapy and radiation, the two most effective treatments for most cancers, do not work nearly as well on LMS.
The other problem with the LMS cancer is that this type of fibroids cancer spreads through the bloodstream and not through the lymph nodes as most other cancers do. Therefore, even if doctors are successful at removing the cancer through surgery they may still have missed cancer cells that escaped into the bloodstream.
Surgery for LMS is never a complete guarantee because some of the cancer cells could have escaped into the bloodstream before the surgery. This fibroids cancer is serious when it develops and so women need to make sure that they rely on imaging techniques as pap smears and blood tests are not likely to detect LMS cancer.
