Dental Flossing is a technique of cleaning between the teeth, under the braces or bridges using a special type of thread or tape.

Dental floss is either a bundle of thin nylon filaments or a plastic (teflon or polyethylene) ribbon used to remove food and dental plaque from teeth. The floss is gently inserted between the teeth and scraped along the teeth sides, especially close to the gums. Dental floss may be flavored or unflavored, and waxed or unwaxed

Why is flossing important?

Flossing complements tooth brushing. It removes food debris and dental plaque between the teeth which are not readily accessible to tooth brushing.

Types of floss

There are a few types of dental floss:
*Waxed or unwaxed floss.
*Flavoured or unflavoured floss.
*Dental tapes.
*Super floss

All of the above are equally effective with a proper technique of flossing.

How often do you need to floss?

Floss regularly. Floss at least once a day, especially just before bed time.

How should you floss?

Follow these steps :
*Wrap an 18-inch strand around your middle fingers and hold a one-inch section tightly.
*Guide the floss gently between your teeth. Move up and down several times while curving around the teeth at the gum line.
*Always floss behind the last tooth.
*Unwind clean floss as you proceed.

Is there a special way to floss for those with physical impairments?

Yes, use special floss holders to facilitate flossing.

Is there any caution you have to be aware of in flossing?

*You must use correct flossing movements with moderate force. Wrong technique can cause injury to the gums.
*At the first few days of flossing, you may experience soreness or bleeding. If the bleeding continues after the first week of flossing, consult your dentist.
