Fibroids are quite a common problem but not always a dangerous one. These are non-cancerous growths that can develop in the uterus and cause a series of problems. They are actually tumors but they are not necessarily dangerous. They are potentially dangerous however and that is the reason that doctors urge women, especially those between the ages of 30-50 to watch for the symptoms of fibroids.

The symptoms of one type of fibroid may vary from another but tend to be pretty much the same. Increased menstrual bleeding is one of the most common reported symptoms of women with fibroids. One of the main symptoms is an increase in menstrual bleeding. Even if you have had periods lasting six days or more since as long as you can remember, you never know and fibroids may have been there the whole time.

There are some women who are used to having a longer than normal menstrual cycle and that does not always mean there is a problem. It is always better to be safe rather than sorry and this is never truer than when it comes to your health. Another common symptom associated with fibroids is frequent urination. There is also a short list of other common symptoms associated with fibroids.

There are quite a few secondary symptoms that are associated with fibroids as well including constipation, backache and fertility problems. With female patients who have been trying for a long period of time to conceive and have not been able to, doctors often test for fibroids. Fibroids are one of the main causes of fertility problems in women of all ages so this is one of the most important symptoms to watch for. Because most of the symptoms of fibroids are so general they are easy to miss and even confuse with other health problems.

Only once the symptoms of fibroids have been diagnosed and the doctor has determined what type they are, can treatment actually begin. This is the biggest problem because the longer wait before treatment, the more chance there is of the whole uterus having to be removed. As soon as fibroids are diagnosed doctors can determine if treatment is necessary. Hysterectomy is often the only answer when fibroids have been left untreated for a long period of time and this is a surgery in which the uterus is completely removed in order to benefit the woman’s health.
