How to Cope With Negative Emotions

A negative emotion is a feeling that makes you feel unhappy and miserable. Negative emotions take away your zest for life and leave you feeling unhappy and unfulfilled. These emotions can include jealousy, anger, bitterness, and hate. Sadness and feeling miserable can also be described as negative emotions.

By allowing these feelings to take control of our life, it can be like going down a slippery slide unable to stop. That downward spiral can cause irrational thinking and behaviour. Everything can seem out of perspective.

At this point it is important to remember that emotions can create very strong reactions – which can create behaviour that is out of character or inappropriate. Being able to recognise that when negative feelings and emotions arise is an important step. Learning the skills needed to cope with anger and aggression takes practice and patience. When things are blown out of proportion is hard to retain equilibrium.

Stop and think about the ramifications of what can occur. Take a breath and don’t allow the situation to take control of you. Go for a walk and take in the fresh air – enjoy the sunshine and nature for five minutes.

Watch for the triggers that create negative emotions to occur. Learn the strategies that you need to cope. It’s time to stop living your life in the rear vision mirror. Let go of the past. By looking around you and being grateful for what is in your life, you can appreciate the good things you have. Focus on the positive and let the negative go.

It is normal to have negative emotions from time to time. The strength that comes from learning strategies on how to deal and cope when everything seems to be going pear shaped will reap many rewards and benefits.
