Sleep

A normal amount of sleep should be 7-8 hours per night. Each time you sleep, hormones are activated to rejuvenate and repair your cells and assist in fat burning. The benefits of exercise does not occur during exercise, but during deep sleep.
In the chart below, look at what happens with your hormones when you sleep well and poorly. Growth hormone spikes between 10pm and 7 am. This is not only an anti-aging hormone, but a key fat-burning hormone. It also protects against cartilage loss.
If you can’t sleep, it’s important to find out WHY. A lack of calcium can PREVENT sleep. Waking up in the middle of night could stem from a problem with the adrenal gland. Waking up exhausted means you are getting light sleep. Sleep apnea occurs when the adrenal gland is exhausted. Hot flashes could be a hormone imbalance. Pain can also interfere with sleep.
Burn Fat While You Sleep
Is it important to know “when” a person burns fat? Dr. Berg in his book, The 7 Principles of Fat Burning, makes this point; “… a person doesn’t melt fat during exercising or during the day; people burn fat only while they are sleeping.”
This statement created both skepticism and curiosity. So I set out to do an experiment on myself to see if this is true or not. I weighed myself in the early morning, then at night for three days in a row. I wanted to see if there was any difference between losing anything between early morning to late night or late night to early morning. I was sure that working out 2 hours in the gym would burn 400 calories. To my surprise, Dr. Berg was correct. During those three days, I lost nothing during the day, which was weird because I lost 400 calories, yet I lost a quarter pound each night. This was interesting, because Dr. Berg says that those 400 calories burned were sugar calories, not fat calories.
Hormones that burn fat get triggered through what you do during the day, but the actual burning process happens when you are very calm and resting. The minute you stress yourself, you shut off weight loss.
But the most interesting thing that Dr. Berg mentioned has to do with fat-making hormones. All it takes is just a little of the wrong foods before bed to prevent any fat burning from occurring. This is depressing, yet hopeful, because he lists all the foods you need to stay completely away from. You can get his book and the list, but one thing on the list was orange juice. Dr. Berg says, half a glass of orange juice before bed will block fat burning for 8 hours.
