Should You Stop Smoking Cold Turkey?

At some point, most smokers want to stop smoking. Many of them would like to stop smoking cold turkey. I have met many people who have quit smoking successfully using the cold turkey approach. Those people swear by the cold turkey method as being the best for quitting smoking. Using the cold turkey approach is indeed a very popular approach to smoking cessation. In fact, about 90% of smokers try to kick the habit by doing it cold turkey.

The problem with the cold turkey approach is that it does not work for most people. Several studies have shown that the success rate for quitting cold turkey is less than 10%. What makes cold turkey so difficult for many people is the addiction to nicotine. Nicotine is a very addictive drug. And nicotine withdrawal can be brutal. Symptoms of nicotine withdrawal can include irritability, fatigue, insomnia, cravings for tobacco, and poor concentration.

Given the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal, only people with the greatest amount of willpower can stop smoking cold turkey. If you are not one of those people, then don’t be too hard on yourself. You are in the company of the vast majority of smokers who want to quit. There is nothing wrong with using smoking cessation products to quit smoking.

Yet, there are people that insist on quitting, using the cold turkey approach. If you really want to quit using the cold turkey approach, I say go for it. After all, trying to kick the habit, using any safe method, is better than not trying at all.

If you want to use the cold turkey method, it would probably be helpful if you did some planning. If it is all possible, try to remove those things that cause you to get stressed out, during the time you are trying to stop smoking cold turkey. All smokers know that they tend to light up during stressful situations. Maybe take a few days of vacation if possible. Also, it might be helpful if you reduce your daily cigarette intake prior to your quit smoking date. While there is really no evidence that smoking reduction is better for your health, there are studies which support the premise that smoking reduction can help to make quitting easier.

In sum, give the cold turkey approach a try if you really want to. However, if you fail at quitting cold turkey, don’t feel too bad. Most people can’t quit cold turkey. There is no shame in getting help to stop smoking. There are a lot of decent products or services to help you quit. Do your research and find out what might work for you.
