Second hand smoking in cars affect children
Smoking cigarettes or other tobacco product must be banned in any vehicle. This is to make children less exposed to second hand smoke. Doctors also said that it should be banned in public places where children or teenagers are walking or playing frequently.
The Royal College of Physicians has made a report with recommendations and conclusions, which has examined the health risk that children are exposed to smoking and have shown some strategies to solve the problem.
There exists a law which already forbids smoking in vehicles which are considered “workplaces”. The report has shown that the present law didn’t have so much success like other laws regarding the same subject. That law has lead to exposure to smoke for employees who are younger. Many of those employees are coming from lower socio-economic groups.
A tobacco advisory group from a college has made a report where it is said that passive smoking has caused more than 165,000 new episodes of disease in kids every year. And in hospitals were admitted 9,500 children.
There have been almost 40 sudden infant deaths each year and 200 cases of bacterial meningitis which were the consequences of the smoke inhalation. So to prevent all the children from harm there should be a protection against second-hand smoke.
The same report suggests that the prices of all tobacco products should be increased and smoking should be forbidden in public places and vehicles which are used by children. Also if someone is involved in illicit tobacco trading, he should be penalized and better controlled.
On the other side are those persons who like smoking and who were very angry when they found out that there should be a ban in vehicles. The spokesperson of Association of British Drivers, Nigel Humphries told BBC News that the car is a private place and it too much to interfere in their personal lives. John Britton is a professor and chairman of the college’s tobacco advisory group and he has supported the medical reasons of the ban. It is very important to realize that passive smoking is killing children and no one should allow that.
To the question about the interfering of healthcare professionals into people’s personal lives and how far they would go, John Britton answered: “Where there’s a conflict between the health or choice of an adult and the health or rights of a child, the child should take precedence.”
