How BOTOX® Removes Wrinkles

In use for more than 15 years, BOTOX® is now the most popular treatment for fine lines and wrinkles in the world. Last year alone, about 6 million Americans received BOTOX® treatments. Though BOTOX® is derived from the substance botulinum toxin, which causes food poisoning and even death, the small doses used in anti-aging treatments are safe and effective, approved by the FDA for cosmetic use in 2002.

How does BOTOX® Cosmetic work?

Skin wrinkles, including fine lines and crow’s feet, are a natural result of the aging process. Wrinkles can be increased or appear earlier as a result of sun damage, certain facial expressions, smoking, and other factors. In younger people, collagen in the skin smoothes out the normal wrinkles caused by muscle contractions in the face or other regions. However, as we age, the collagen in our skin degrades little by little, so that over time the wrinkles persist. In addition to other facial rejuvenation techniques, BOTOX® effectively reduces wrinkles in a noninvasive manner.

To compensate for the decreased collagen, BOTOX® blocks the nerve signals that produce skin-wrinkling muscle contractions. It does this by interfering with the chemical messages sent from the nervous system to facial muscles. Because the BOTOX® is administered in small doses, the nerve blocking does not cause health problems or spread to other regions of the body, making it safe for reducing wrinkles in the skin.

Because BOTOX® is poisonous in large doses, some have doubted its safety for cosmetic use. Some worry that using BOTOX® as an anti-aging treatment could lead to permanent muscle paralysis or other side effects. While a tiny percentage of patients experience severe adverse reactions, BOTOX® Cosmetic is completely safe for almost all patients. However, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and patients with nerve or muscle disorders should not use BOTOX®.

What are the side effects of BOTOX®?

BOTOX® Cosmetic side effects are generally mild, usually limited to a mild headache for a day or two after treatment. In a few very rare cases, patients experience a temporary drooping of the eyelids called ptosis, which wears off as the BOTOX® dissipates. However, this is unlikely when BOTOX® Cosmetic is administered by a qualified cosmetic surgeon. Developing a rash or difficulty breathing can be signs of an extremely rare serious adverse reaction, so patients experiencing those symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.

How long do BOTOX® Cosmetic’s effects last?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is effective in reducing fine lines and wrinkles for about 3 to 4 months following the first treatment, and after several sessions may last up to 6 months between injections. Continuing treatment is not a problem for most patients because the procedure is quick and relatively painless, not to mention relatively inexpensive.
