Breast Augmentation in Your Late Teens and Early 20s
Women of all ages decide on breast augmentation surgery for a variety of reasons. Deciding to undergo breast augmentation in your late teens and early 20s requires careful deliberation and consultation with your family and most importantly, the cosmetic surgeon you select to do the surgery. There are several considerations you must make when deciding to proceed with breast augmentation surgery.
There are two main types of breast implants available for breast augmentation:
- Silicone gel
- Saline
Both implants are fluid containers made of silicone elastomer shells, a type of medical plastic. Silicone gel implants are filled by the manufacturer with a cohesive silicone gel that provides a more natural weight and appearance. Saline implants are empty or partially filled when inserted and then filled after placement by the cosmetic surgeon. Saline closely matches your body’s own fluids and is readily absorbed in case of a rupture, so is therefore deemed safer than silicone gel.
The FDA is the agency that oversees medical devices. In the 1990’s they pulled silicone breast implants from the market due to safety concerns. Silicone implants were still available for reconstruction, but not for cosmetic reasons. Since that time, thanks to advances in implant technology, in 2006 the FDA finally approved silicone implants once again for use in breast augmentation surgery because no connection between silicone implants and either breast cancer or autoimmune diseases was ever established.
Unfortunately, silicone implants are not available to women under age 22. Between your teens and early twenties, your breast tissue may still be developing and the FDA feels that silicone is not a reliably safe option for that age group. While breast augmentation surgery is available to you at any time from your late teens to early 20’s, you do not have all the implant options available to you, only saline implants.
Some of the benefits of saline implants include:
- Saline is readily absorbed by your body in case of rupture
- Incisions are smaller since implants can be inserted while empty or partially empty
- More placement options are available with the use of saline implants
There are many placement options available, some of which might be more desirable to you as a young woman.
- Subglandular – The most popular placement is subglandular, which places the implant underneath the mammary gland, but in front of the pectoralis muscle. Either the saline or the silicone gel implant is used for this placement.
- Subpectoral – Subpectoral placement, also known as dual plane, and sometimes described as “submuscular” places the implant under the pectoralis major muscle after releasing the lower insertion point of the muscle. This gives the implant some additional protection.
- Submuscular – The submuscular placement puts the implant underneath the entire muscle. This provides for the maximum amount of tissue over the implant, it is completely surrounded by muscle. Surgical difficulty, prolonged healing, and little benefits in either safety or appearance make this placement unpopular among surgeons.
Any of these placements are an option depending on your specific requirements, medical history, and body type.
