Treating depression with ADHD is sometimes summarily dealt with by prescribing a few anti depressants and hoping that this will solve the problem! It is highly probable that it will not do so. These are the serotonin reuptake inhibitors, known as SSRIs and the famous brands on the market to-day are Prozac and Zoloft. The problem with these medications is there can be an increase in impulsiveness which is one of the problem areas associated with ADHD itself. This does not seem to be such a great solution.

The antidepressants known as trycyclics are sometimes prescribed to deal with depression. But there are question marks about the side effects. There seems to be particular concern about increases in blood pressure and heart problems. These are possible but there have been very few cases that we know about. However if teenagers smoke marijuana while on these drugs, delirium may result.

Channelling aggressive and violent behavior.
Sometimes ADHD may be accompanied by violent and aggressive behavioral problems and the secret is to be able to channel this into activities like sports and time in the open. However taking an antidepressant is hardly likely to achieve that sort of result which is why a child behavior modification plan is so important.

But as regards treating depression with ADHD, we are thinking here of ways we can help the child to overcome negativity and to stop feeling worthless and increase feelings of self esteem. Having a rewards and consequences system in place is so important and will reward the positive behaviours while definitely discouraging disruptive behavior.
