When teenagers have anxiety disorders, they’re going act out in some way. If they’re boys, they may get into a lot fights and have an inferiority complex. If they’re girls they may throw extreme tantrums or become extremely withdrawn.
It’s up to you to talk to your teen and ask them if they have ever had the following severe anxiety symptoms: nausea, feelings of unreality, excessive sweating, feeling like nothing is real, extreme and unfounded fear, shaking, feeling cramped, and shortness of breath.
These are the classic signs and symptoms of a panic attack. Social anxiety disorder and panic attacks are basically one and the same, although the “trigger” for social anxiety panic attacks is usually social in nature, as you would imagine.
Anxiety attacks are truly difficult to explain for a teenager. If you’ve never had one, you have no idea of the amazingly elevated feelings of fear that they feel.
