Christmas is the time of year when everyone wants to look their best. Little Black Dress diets are in all the magazines, celebrities like Dawn French and Ruth Jones are unveiling their new slim figures and everyone has the Christmas party in mind.
You could be forgiven for thinking then that if you’re a celebrity, putting on weight is the last thing you would want. But losing weight is a really lucrative business for celebrities and helps relaunch flagging careers.
Many celebrities have made a business out of trying to slim down their size. Claire Richards, ex-Steps singer has a DVD and a television series based on losing weight for her wedding and ex-Eastenders actresses Nadia Sawalha and Hannah Waterman both have fitnessDVD’s showing dramatic weightloss results. Actress Claire Sweeney investigated the whole “eat what you like” scenario for a television documentary entitled “My Big Fat Diet” and ended up putting on more than two stone by eating whatever she felt like.
All this emphasis on size has lead to an increase in eating disorders being diagnosed in young people. The craze for the so called “size zero” (aUSterm which equates to a size 4 in theUK) has left many young people worrying about their size and with nowhere to turn to for support. Journalist Dawn Porter and ex-singer Louise Redknapp both investigated the size zero phenomenon and found it to be too extreme to sustain.

For many, the pressure of trying to be like their favourite celebrity or popstar is just too much, which in turn can lead to extreme dieting and eating disorders.Colchester, a northEssextown has a vibrant student population due to theUniversityofEssexcampus, theSixthFormCollegeand Colchester Institute and GP’s regularly see teenagers and even pre-teens with a suspected eating disorder.
For those diagnosed with an eating disorder, fortunately there is help available, but like the GP’s inColchesterhave found, many remain untreated with devastating effect.
Recent crazes for celebrity fitness DVD’s are taking the whole “new me” makeover to new levels. It has been reported recently that actress Martine McCutcheon has actually been encouraged to put on weight ahead of embarking on her fitnessDVD, so the transformation is all the more impressive.
However when you see a fabulous set of “before” and “after” photographs in your favourite magazine, it pays to remember that not everything you see is what you get.
Airbrushing is a very common practice in publishing houses and can eliminate many an unwanted lump or bump on a celebrities outline. Some celebrities have actively campaigned against airbrushing. Davina McCall joined Claudia Winkleman, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, Fearne Cotton and Myleene Klass for a shoot for Heat Magazine without a scrap of make-up to show the readers just what they looked like.
Similarly US singer Britney Spears showed exactly how her photographs had been digitally enhanced by bravely releasing the “before” and “after” airbrushing shots of her in a bikini.
So instead of wishing you were thinner, taller, had a smaller nose or straighter teeth, join these top celebrities and celebrate who you really are!

An important aspect of the gift of presence is the ability to use one’s style, identity, and beliefs congruently with cultural beliefs and practices so we can grow and learn ways of doing, being and seeing the world. Most of us have experienced the gift of presence from family, friends and religious communities when we needed someone to “be there” for us; we have all needed someone to be present to hear and see what comes up, speak words of encouragement and reinforcement, and encourage us.
