Snacking for bodybuilders is significantly different from the typical snacking habits of the average sedentary adult. Empty calories, sugar, sodium and unsaturated fats are kept to a minimum. Bodybuilders need a diet that is high in protein for building muscle and carbohydrates to supply the body with energy to burn. However, sticking to the normal routine of eating three meals a day can often lead to an unpleasant bloated feeling after meals that can be detrimental to bodybuilding habits, especially considering the sheer amount of food that a bodybuilder is likely to consume. This is why bodybuilders break their meals into several smaller meals and bodybuilding snacks designed to provide the body with constant supply of energy and protein to sustain rapid growth. If you want your metabolism to run efficiently throughout the day and keep yourself at an ideal level where you can start your weightlifting routines at any time, bodybuilding snacks are essential for a smooth operation.

However, in keeping with the ideal diet of high protein, whole grains and some acceptable fats, your bodybuilding snacks should also follow the same structure. This will keep you feeling satisfied throughout the day and keep you from destroying your diet through your larger meals by indulging your cravings. Healthy snack bars and protein shakes are a staple among many bodybuilders because they are readily available on the market and are formulated specifically to supplement a bodybuilder or athlete’s diet. Shakes that are made with whey protein are recommended; although there are other more specialized formulations you may want to experiment with as you progress into your training. Protein bars on the market today will typically contain either whey or soy protein, along with ingredients such as nuts, milk, eggs and oats. Some commercial protein bars are coated in yogurt or chocolate to improve the taste. There are even meal replacement bars that contain considerably more protein, along with essential vitamins and minerals you would usually source from regular meals.

Once you start to take up bodybuilding, it is important to increase the number of calories and protein you consume in a day. This usually means a 500 to 1000 calorie boost from what you are accustomed to. This can be difficult to accommodate in the usual 3-meal day setups that are considered the norm. This is why it is important to split it up into smaller meals and supplement your diet with bodybuilding snacks every now and then. That way, you can replace your energy after a workout and avoid the energy crash that can sometimes occur after exercise. Eat a balanced diet and schedule snacks whenever you are likely to feel the hungriest in between your meals.
