Yoghurt can be described as the dairy product formed when milk undergoes bacterial fermentation by the action of bacteria known as Lactobacillus. It forms a part of staple diet almost all over the world. Though evidence shows that yoghurt has been known since 4,500 years, its health benefits have come to light only in the recent years.
Yoghurt comes forward as a prebiotic food which is a champion when it comes to boosting the body’s immune system. It is a storehouse of protein, calcium, Vitamin B12, Vitamin B6 and riboflavin. Its nutritional value exceeds even that of milk. Yoghurt targets gastrointestinal infections and cures them without the need of antibiotics. It is also beneficial in conditions of diarrhoea. It is also a heart-friendly snack because daily consumption of as little as 100gm of yoghurt aids in lowering LDL cholesterol and increasing the good HDL cholesterol.Studies reveal that foods rich in calcium inversely affect body fat. So increase in consumption of yoghurt boosts weight loss.
Yoghurt also reduces the problem of arthritis. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, it relieves the inflammation of arthritis. Its also averts the action of H.pylori bacteria in the bowel and hence cures ulcers. Whole milk products reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. Yoghurt scores high when it comes to providing calcium to the body. It is very helpful for growing children and works in building bones far better than calcium supplements. It also helps in getting rid of volatile substances like hydrogen sulphide present in the mouth which cause bad breath.Just make sure the yoghurt you buy is made of low fat milk and is prebiotic.
