Osteoporosis and Fosamax

Osteoporosis may develop in both men and women.. As women go through a menopausal period, they are more affected by it due the decrease of estrogen production. The importance of estrogen rests on its role during bone formation and bone remodeling. The World Health Organization stated that there is around 2.5 standard deviation DXA of bone mineral density (BMD) found in every osteoporosis patient. There is no marked symptoms associated with this bone anomaly but there is an increase of bone breakage among osteoporosis patient. Commonly utilized as treatment for this bone condition includes specific types of medication such as biphosphonates and lifestyle changes. The increase of Fosamax issues has made medical organizations to have a goal of reduced osteoporosis fractures by 20%. This goal stemmed from the fact that osteoporosis statistics show the condition is affecting many people dangerously more than how heart attacks, strokes, and new breast cancer should affect people. This kind of medical condition is also a disease that strains the pocket. Trends show that this will continue to rise.

A medical condition where degeneration of the bone occurs is called osteoporosis. Old age is seen as a culprit but it can still be caused by many other factors. The results always include bones being brittle, porous, and prone to fracture.

Many osteoporosis treatments are also being formulated in order to save people. Right now, lifestyle changes in diet, exercise and fracture risk prevention are the top treatments. Still, biphosphonates, vitamin K, vitamin D, and calcium supplements, and estrogen replacement therapy for menopausal osteoporosis in postmenopausal women are required with the previously noted lifestyle changes.

People who have osteoporosis are prescribed with antiresorptive or bone anabolic drug agents such as biphosphonates. Normally, physicians prescribe to their patients the biphosphonate drug called Fosamax. Using this biphosphonate drug for the first four years in patients with osteoporosis leads to improvement in bone strengthening and risk prevention. Claims that the drug causing atypical, low-impact femur fractures were reported by long-term Fosamax users of five years or more, adding another blow to the problem. And a Fosamax lawsuit has been filed due to these femur fractures.

As was shown in these studies, women who are 68 or older and have taken Fosamax for over five years have about a three-percent chance of suffering from a femoral shaft fracture than those who used the drugs for fewer than 100 days.
