Problems of hair transplant ( www.divinecosmeticsurgery.com)

Hair transplant is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures in men and now also gradually in women. It is generally very safe, has a fast recovery with minimal downtime and early return to work. However everything said and done, every surgical procedure can have its problems, and its own unique set of complications. Here are some of the problems unique to hair transplants and how to prevent them

  1. anesthesia risks –. The simple trick is to have an experienced anesthetist. Always give test dose of the anesthetic drug to be given and take prior history of adverse effects or allergies
  2. infection – extremely rare in the scalp
  3. paresthesia – there are occasional areas on the back of the scalp where there can be sensory disturbances, however these would generally recover on their own
  4. permanent pain in the back of the head – never occurs if the strip is taken from a proper level at the time of harvesting the strip. If the strip has been entirely supragaleal, there is never any long term pain and paresthesias, since all the nerves are intact
  5. longer time to hair growth – this can occur, since some of the hair are “shocked:” at the time of the transplant and can take longer to grow.
  6. uneven scar on the donor area – always choose a plastic surgeon for the procedure since they are trained for proper tissue handling, and better wound healing
  7. uneven hair growth – hair transplant is a procedure where hair is redistributed, and no new hair is grown. hence to achieve a very high density, one needs to undergo more than 1 procedure. To increase the density, the procedure can be done after about 6 months from the first procedure.
