My children and I were watching the movie “Tangled” on DVD last night and there is a song in it entitled “Mother Knows Best”, which we really liked- we also enjoyed the movie and found it to very funny. This particular song got me thinking about how many times we say to our children that parents know what is best for kids and that they should trust us to be correct and that they will thanks us later for unpopular decisions made now. I still remember my mother saying that I would understand her much more when I had children of my own, and now I catch myself spouting the same line to my children.
The reason many cliches and adages continue to be used is because they inevitably carry some truth, which ensures that each generation passes on its pearls of wisdom along with old wives’ tales! One of these gems is a favorite with mothers everywhere, especially those on the subcontinent. For centuries we have been told that we should regularly use hair oil to ensure strong hair growth and to avoid hair loss.Instead of hunting around for hair fall solutions and hair loss treatments, it is better to address the issue early on, hence proving correct another famous saying –”that prevention is better than cure”.

As children our mothers would sit us down once a week and massage our scalps with foul smelling oil that we later learned was mustard oil and to this day it is the favorite hair oil used in India and Pakistan, being easily available and relatively cheap. There are so many alternative oils that can be used and that smell much better also, a popular one being jojoba hair oil. Also available are many tonics and lotions which also claim to provide a Hair fall solutions, although it is found that oils such as olive, almond and rapeseed are better and provide more nutrients to the scalp.
When using hair oils, it is important that the oil is applied to the roots as well as the tips and well dispersed. The very action of actually massaging the scalp encourages the hair follicles to grow by stimulating them. The nutrients in the oil feed the follicles and encourage Hair growth as well as making the root stronger, and hence acting as a Hair loss treatment also. These days a lot of shampoos claim that they have replaced the need for massaging with chemicals and even though their claims may contain some truth regarding the quality of the product; it is hard to believe that people will stop using hair oils.
There is something soothing in the actions and it is a very relaxing experience, especially if done by someone else, and for me it always transports me to my childhood and special memories of being pampered and enjoying the time spent with my mother and grandmother, without interruptions and the distractions of modern life.
Naturally it really deserve this much attention. But our much busy and polluted air it is becoming much tough for us to sustain our hairs as long as we want and as much healthy with growing.
