Saving Your Teeth – Are the Odds Against You?

There are minor variations in what the statistics tell us. Seventy five vs. eight percent of Americans have some form of gum disease or seventy five percent over age 35 have this problem – it doesn’t matter which you subscribe too.

Although I think the last one is dangerous because it gives a false impression. The basic point is that a lot of people have periodontal disease right now. The reason the last example is dangerous is because it gives the false impression that if you are under thirty-five, you don’t have to worry about gingivitis -rubbish!

There are two concerns with this. First, even a child can have the problem. Second, it is more frequent that we begin to see the damage of this disease that has accumulated over years around the age of thirty-five.

Do you see the difference there? You can start taking action against gingivitis at any age, the sooner the better. But, if you start younger, you can prevent the damage that becomes visible after thirty-five in the first place. Why would you walk around with periodontal disease and let the damage grow from the age of sixteen or even twenty if you:

1. Know that you have this problem
2. Know what actions you have to take to stop or prevent it

The answer, of course, is that most people have no clue that they have this problem in the first place. They only know when the damage gets to the point where a dentist says, “It is time for us to do a scaling and root planing” – as if it were the most routine thing in the whole world.

Instead, you should try to stop this situation from happening and you can. Learn what you can do to stop or prevent gum disease now.
