Fever is body normal reaction to infection and other illnesses. It is not a disease but a symptom and often means you have minor illness. Normal body temperature is 37ºC. Above this is fever. Now, fever become one of the common diseases in human life.
Causes of Fever
*Commonly viral infection such as colds and flu, earaches, sorethroat, diarrhoea ,dengue and HIV.
*Bacterial infection such as appendicitis, lung infection (pneumonia), tuberculosis (TB) and meningitis (brain infection)
*Malaria
*Joint disease
*Medication such as antibiotic etc
*Cancer
Treatment For Fever
Home treatment:
*If fever is mild no treatment is required
*Drink water or fluids frequently to replenish lost fluids.
*Eat light, easily digested food such as soup
*Try a shower or sponge bath with tepid water may reduce the fever.
*Dress lightly, do not wrap with blanket as this will increase the fever.
*Get a correct amount of paracetamol to help relieve your fever
When to see a doctor?
If you have serious symptoms:
*If temperature >39ºC not improve with home treatment.
*History of recent traveling outside your country .
*Has other symptoms like rash, bleeding, fit, drowsy, breathless, joint pain or swelling
*Pain in the abdomen, eye or cheek bone.
*Has other illness such as diabetes mellitus and cancer.
*Unable to take enough food and fluids.
*Painful and frequent urination or less amount.
*No improvement after 4 to 5 days.
*Fever still persistent despite home treatment.
*Fever associated with injury

1. How to measure body temperature?
*To be sure if you have a fever, measure your body temperature with a clinical thermometer, available from any pharmacy.
*Wash it with soap and water, especially the bulb area which goes into the mouth.
*Shake it to bring the mercury line below 35 Degree Celsius.
*Place it under the tongue or armpit.
*Remove it after 4 minutes from under the tongue or 5 minutes from under the armpit. (if you are taking armpit temperature, add 0.5 degree Celsius correct for the lower external body temperature).
*Take the reading where the mercury line stops.
2. Can we measure temperature using ear probe thermometer or color strips on the skin?
*Ear probe thermometers are used often but less accurate.
*Temperature color strips are not accurate and not advisable.
