A key aspect of reducing uric acid is to understand just where it comes from. Once you understand this, you are better able to understand why a low purine diet can be very beneficial in reducing uric acid, and thus banishing your gout symptoms. You’ll discover here the link between purines and uric acid, and, what makes up a low purine diet.

First off, let’s look at what causes the painful symptoms of gout. The pain, inflammation and swelling are caused by crystals deposited in your joints, tendons and surrounding tissues. The crystals are formed from excess uric acid that hasn’t been flushed from your body. Normally your kidneys flush acid out via urine. Sometimes though, they just don’t do this well enough, so you end up with excess uric acid.

So where does it come from? It’s a byproduct of the breakdown of compounds called ‘purines’ which we all have in our bodies. They perform the important functions of producing protein and energy.

But purines also exist in much of our food. So that when you have gout (and in between attacks) it makes sense to reduce the levels of purines, so reducing uric acid. This takes a low purine diet. And a low purine diet just means avoiding high purine foods, and, eating low purine foods instead.

Here are some high purine foods to avoid when reducing uric acid:-

Red meat, game, offal-type foods, gravy, poultry, shellfish, mackerel, herrings, sardines, anchovies, fish roe, beans, peas, lentils, asparagus, mushrooms, yeast. And avoid alcohol, especially beer.

But these low purine foods are okay:-

Low-fat dairy products, high-vitamin C foods, complex carbohydrates (e.g. breads, cereals, pasta, rice, etc.), essential fatty acids (e.g. tuna, salmon, seeds), vegetables (except those mentioned above), cherries, strawberries, blueberries, grapes.

The other things to consider are things like your weight, your body acidity, general health, any underlying medical problems, any medication you’re taking, and so on.

It’s important also to ensure that you aren’t just treating the symptoms of gout. In other words, getting rid of the symptoms, then returning to your old habits. You have to get at the root cause of your gout. If you don’t, you could have recurring gout attacks which can leave you with permanently damaged joints and kidney problems.
