If someone in your immediate family has recently been diagnosed with high blood pressure you should certainly be concerned for them as this disease has honestly earned its nickname “The Silent Killer”. However, if one member of the family has it, make sure to have the blood pressure readings of the rest of the family taken by a medical professional.
Why do that you ask?
While nobody knows for certain what causes high blood pressure, most persons with HBP have several lifestyle behaviors in common. These include an unhealthy diet, a sedentary lifestyle and poor stress management. Obviously these are choices, not genetic conditions, and families often make the same choices.
Think about this for a moment. Diet plays a huge role in both causing and controlling high blood pressure. Families typically eat one or two meals together daily. If the food your spouse ate contributed to HBP, what do you think its doing to you and other members of the family?
Exercise, rather the lack of exercise, is also a major contributor to higher pressure readings. If you family is not active, if the family culture is to watch TV or videos rather than exercise, the family could be at risk. Really think about this one for a moment because Americans in general do not get the exercise that their bodies need. Do you fall in that category?
If there is excessive stress at home, be it over finances or job security or just the relationship, this can have an adverse effect on your blood vessels if it is not managed correctly.
Do you see where this is going? If you share a common diet, don’t get regular exercise and have excessive stress, the family, not just the person who has been diagnosed, is at risk. High blood pressure affects our bodies in different ways. It’s not like catching a cold and passing it on. It may take years to get serious in one body and months in another so just because nobody else has elevated readings right now does not mean its not at work on your body.
What about the person who was diagnosed? Are they on blood pressure medication? Did you know that BP drugs will never cure the condition but rather just control it. That means literally a lifetime of taking daily pills. Is that something that you would look forward to?
There is an alternative and its based on the American Heart Association approved DASH diet. Correct nutrition along with daily exercise and effective stress management can not only control HBP, it can cure it.
You owe it to the person who has been diagnosed, and to yourself as well, to learn as much about this disease and the alternative treatments as you can. Your family will love you even more for thinking of them.
