Do Patients Really Need a Remedy for Fibromyalgia?

A year after a supposed synthetically manufactured remedy for fibromyalgia was approved by the Food and Drug Administration, discussions still center on the viability of this drug to cure the condition.

Pharmaceutical companies contend that the fibromyalgia drug can change the brain’s perception of pain for this particular condition and help neutralize it, very much like the way fluoxetine and other anti-depressants work to cure depression. But patient advocacy groups argue that the medicine only worsens the condition and allows the patients to be fixated over body aches that most people just put up with.

Fibromyalgia, a condition that primarily affects women in their 30s and older, has been known to trigger widespread body pains and painful responses to mental and emotional pressure. Many afflicted patients also suffer from chronic fatigue and irritable bowel syndrome.

A typical case of fibromyalgia causes extensive muscle and joint pains of unknown origins. Commonly, doctors prescribe painkillers to those who suffer from fibromyalgia. But they have since found that patients generally do not respond to painkillers, and only end up having their symptoms recur.

Drug companies that claim to have a synthetic remedy for fibromyalgia work on the precept that pain from this condition is being caused by abnormalities within the central nervous system. Instead of curing the symptoms, the drug sets off a chemical reaction in the body to correct its awareness of pain. However, patient advocacy groups and physicians say that the drug may also result in severe weight gain, edema and dizziness. Over time, patients also develop an unhealthy dependence on different painkillers and sleep medicines.

In the end, these advocacy groups suggest that nothing cures fibromyalgia better and safer than a regimen of exercise, diet, nutritional supplements, and body cleansing therapies. A natural, all-organic remedy for fibromyalgia also acts as the key to cure people of this condition once and for all.
