World Health Organization (WHO) 2007 Report:
An estimated 34 million people are living with HIV, with nearly 7500 new infections each day.
HIV infection is divided into the following stages:
Category A
**Primary HIV infection (also called acute HIV) infection or acute seroconversion syndrome). Symptoms range from a mild glandular fever-like illness to an aseptic meningitis, severe symptoms are rare.
**Clinical latent period with or without persistent generalized lymphadenopathy defined as nodes >1cm in diameter at two or more extrainguinal sites for more than 3 months in the absence of causes other than HIV infection.
Category B
**Early symptoms HIV infection, which includes patients who do not have conditions specific to category A or C, e.g per viganal candidiasis, oral hairy leucoplakia, herpes zoster involving more than one dermatome, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and pelvic inflammatory disease.
Category C
**Includes patients with clinical conditions indicating that they have severe immunosuppression. e.g Candidiasis of bronchi, Kaposi’s sarcome, Pneumocystic carinii pneumonia and etc.
Prevention and control HIV and AIDS
**The average risk of HIV transmission following a needle-stick injury involving contaminated blood is about 0.3%, post -exposure prophylaxis with zidovudine, lamivudine and indinavir for 4 weeks reduces the risk by about 80%. Prophylaxis should be started as soon as possible after exposure.
**Pregnant HIV-positive women should receive antiviral therapy to reduce the risk of vertical transmission. They should be advised againts breast-feeding.
**The use of condoms reduces sexual transmission of HIV.
**Advise drug addicts not to shares needles, some areas provide free strile needless.

The risk of HIV transmission occurring after any potential exposure to bodily fluids is poorly defined. The highest risk sexual activity, however, is thought to be anal intercourse without a condom. In this case, the risk of infection may be as high as 3%-5% for each exposure. The risk is probably less for vaginal intercourse without a condom and even less for oral sex without a latex barrier. Despite the fact that no single sexual exposure carries a high risk of contagion, HIV infection can occur after even one sexual event. Thus, people must always be diligent in protecting themselves from potential infection.
