AIDS or HIV information is very important for us. Do you know “What cause HIV”. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is the cause of the acquired immunce deficiency syndrome (AIDS). A person with eventually dies of variety of serious diseases and rare cancers.

What cause HIV?

**Sexual intercourse. World-wide, heterosexual and Homosexual intercourse accounts for the vast majority of infections.

**Mother to child. Transmission can occur in utero, during childbirth and via breast milk.

**Contaminated blood, blood products and organ donations. The risk is now minimal in developed countries since the introduction of screening blood product in market.

**Contaminated needles. Intravenous drug addicts, needle-stick injuries in healthcare workers. HIV infection is not spread by ordinary social or household contact.

World Health Organization (WHO) 2007 Report:

An estimated 34 million people are living with HIV, with nearly 7500 new infections each day.


HIV infection is divided into the following stages:
Category A
**Primary HIV infection (also called acute HIV) infection or acute seroconversion syndrome). Symptoms range from a mild glandular fever-like illness to an aseptic meningitis, severe symptoms are rare.

**Clinical latent period with or without persistent generalized lymphadenopathy defined as nodes >1cm in diameter at two or more extrainguinal sites for more than 3 months in the absence of causes other than HIV infection.

Category B
**Early symptoms HIV infection, which includes patients who do not have conditions specific to category A or C, e.g per viganal candidiasis, oral hairy leucoplakia, herpes zoster involving more than one dermatome, idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and pelvic inflammatory disease.

Category C
**Includes patients with clinical conditions indicating that they have severe immunosuppression. e.g Candidiasis of bronchi, Kaposi’s sarcome, Pneumocystic carinii pneumonia and etc.

Prevention and control HIV and AIDS

**The average risk of HIV transmission following a needle-stick injury involving contaminated blood is about 0.3%, post -exposure prophylaxis with zidovudine, lamivudine and indinavir for 4 weeks reduces the risk by about 80%. Prophylaxis should be started as soon as possible after exposure.

**Pregnant HIV-positive women should receive antiviral therapy to reduce the risk of vertical transmission. They should be advised againts breast-feeding.

**The use of condoms reduces sexual transmission of HIV.

**Advise drug addicts not to shares needles, some areas provide free strile needless.
