How To Get Rid Of Acne – 4 Myths That Get In The Way
Anyone who has ever suffered from acne can tell you that it is an embarrassing and frustrating experience. Many people get very self conscious about acne break outs and it can affect their self esteem, their confidence and their peer relations. An additional frustration is that there is so much contradictory advice that is given on just how to cure acne. Really, if it were that simple, wouldn’t we have all made it disappear already?
Despite much scientific evidence to the contrary, many myths about acne still persist. Here are the most common ones that you should ignore:
You Will Grow Out Of Acne
Come on now, if that were true how is that so many adults are plagued with break outs? Hormonal imbalances are one of the most contributing factors to acne, however it is not only teenagers who have hormonal fluctuations and imbalances. Pregnancies, aging (yes, men and women), stress and many other factors contribute to hormonal imbalance. Acne is not something you can just “sit tight” and out grow.
Acne is Due To Poor Hygiene
Yes, proper and frequent cleansing as an important part of keeping acne break outs at bay, but dirt does NOT cause acne. Acne is caused by overactive sebaceous (oil) glands deep below the skin. If the pores where the sebum usually escapes get blocked then the sebum stays below the surface and a pimple forms from this skin pore blockage.
Acne is Caused By Not Having Enough Sex
Well, I don’t like to jump to conclusions, but I have to assume a man started this myth. While sex can serve to lower stress (hey, it can also elevate it!) which is always good for acne, it’s not going to make your acne go away. And certainly not all celibate people have acne. There is just no correlation between sex and acne.
Only A Dermatologist Can Cure Acne
Well, I think we can agree that advertisers and dermatologists might be responsible for propagating this myth. Millions of dollars are spend each year on “skin clearing” products, yet still acne is the number one skin problem. Certainly a licensed professional can give you good advice about your skin. Sun exposure and skin cancer are real issues and ideally everyone should routinely see a dermatologist. But here’s a hint. The only person who can cure your acne is YOU. That’s because some of the biggest contributors to the sebaceous glands overproducing oil are diet and hormonal imbalances. These are life style issues and there is no miracle cream to wash them away.
So steer away from the myths, and stick with the facts about acne.
